“Mi México”—16 ARTISTS CONTEMPLATE MEXICO ON THE EVE OF THE BICENTENNIAL

Mexico is both the inspiration and home to the thirteen distinguished artists invited to participate in
Galeria/Atelier’s group show Mi Mexico. The momentous occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the
Independence and 100th Anniversary of the Revolution stirs much emotion in the artists selected and each
have embraced this opportunity to personally interpret this moment in history as it pertains to them. Each
artist was asked to draw from deep inside themselves and to share openly and honestly their thoughts and
feelings about Mexico past, present and future.

BEYOND CERAMICS: TWO YOUNG MEXICAN SCULPTORS TAKE CERAMICS TO NEW HEIGHTS

You don’t have to look very far to notice the importance of ceramics in Mexico. “Barro” has been a staple
in both the high and low arts throughout history and the young artists of Beyond Ceramics have each found
a unique way to work this mundane material in ways that broach the sublime and challenge the spectator to
judge whether or not it is still the earthy substance it claims to be. Rodrigo Lara and Adrián Guerrero are
young, talented and unafraid of breaking the barriers that try to delineate their medium of choice.

Claude Mathey's Transfigured soul
Written by Melanie Harris

THE TRANSFIGURED SOUL OF CLAUDE MATHEY

For her fourth San Miguel show Claude Mathey does not disappoint her audience whom she has accustomed to smiling upon viewing her work. The talented former Parisian set designer has not given up her sense of humor. The transfigured soul, speaks more of a point of departure and less of an altered state of being. This worldly artist is thankfully not a victim of depression due to the economic recession or any other major life catastrophe that has rendered her oeuvre dark or more critical than normal. (Those fortunate enough to have seen her Callejon des Loupes show in 2005 will recall some fairly somber pieces there.) Instead, consider this work in this show to be a modest artist’s attempt at opening up a bit more personally to an audience who has been so receptive and supportive of her work. True to her French sensibilities she presents works whose sole purpose is to make you laugh and also some whose sole purpose is to make you think and feel.
